Our Story

About Bread 4 Life

We are a small team with a simple mission — to share the bread that truly satisfies, and to walk with people as they discover what it means to know and follow Jesus Christ.

How It Started

Born Out of a Personal Encounter

Bread 4 Life began with a simple conviction: that the most important thing one person can do for another is introduce them to Jesus. Not argue them into faith. Not hand them a tract and walk away. But genuinely walk with them — answer their questions, pray with them, and point them toward a community where they can grow.

Our founder, David Mercer, came to faith after years of searching — trying to fill a hunger that nothing in the world could satisfy. When he finally encountered the gospel, he understood in a new way what Jesus meant when He said, "I am the bread of life." That phrase became the name and the heartbeat of this ministry.

What started as a personal blog and a handful of conversations has grown into a ministry that reaches people across the country — through this website, through prayer, and through a network of volunteers who believe that every person deserves to hear the gospel clearly and personally.

Our Mission

To share the living bread — Jesus Christ — with every hungry soul who will listen, and to walk with them as they grow.

We do this through clear gospel content, personal prayer, discipleship resources, and by connecting people to local churches where they can be known and loved.

What We Believe

Our Core Values

01

Scripture is Our Foundation

Everything we do is rooted in the Bible. We believe it is the inspired, authoritative Word of God — sufficient to guide every area of life and faith. We don't add to it or take from it; we simply try to understand it and live by it.

02

The Gospel is the Point

We exist to share one message: that Jesus Christ died for sinners and rose again, and that anyone who trusts in Him will be saved. This is not one topic among many — it is the center of everything we do.

03

Every Person Has Dignity

Every human being is made in the image of God and deserves to be treated with respect and care. We welcome people from every background, every story, and every starting point — no one is too far gone for grace.

04

Discipleship Takes Time

We are not interested in quick decisions that don't last. We believe in walking with people — answering questions, providing resources, and pointing toward community — because real growth happens over time, in relationship.

05

Prayer Changes Things

We take prayer seriously. We believe God hears and answers prayer, and that interceding for others is one of the most meaningful things we can do. Every prayer request we receive is prayed over by a real person.

06

The Church is Essential

We are not a church — but we believe deeply in the local church. Our goal is never to replace it but to point people toward it. Healthy faith grows in community, and we want to help people find one.

John 6:35

"I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

— Jesus Christ

The Team

The People Behind the Ministry

We are a small, volunteer-driven team united by a shared conviction that the gospel changes everything. Every person on this team has a story — and every story involves grace.

J.R. Martin

Founder

J.R. is the heart and vision behind Bread 4 Life. Driven by a personal encounter with the gospel, he founded this ministry with one goal: to make sure every person who is searching has a clear, honest path to Jesus Christ and a community to grow in.

Sherry Martin

Co-Founder

Sherry co-founded Bread 4 Life alongside her husband J.R. and brings warmth, prayer, and pastoral care to everything the ministry does. She has a deep love for people in every season of life and a gift for making others feel seen and welcomed.

A Note of Clarity

What Bread 4 Life Is — and Isn't

We are an outreach and discipleship ministry — not a church, a denomination, or a theological institution. We don't take positions on secondary doctrinal debates, and we don't represent any single church tradition. Our focus is narrow by design: the gospel, and the people who need to hear it.

We believe the local church is God's primary vehicle for discipleship, and we work hard to point people toward healthy local churches rather than positioning ourselves as a substitute for one.

If you have questions about our beliefs, our approach, or anything else — please reach out. We'd rather have an honest conversation than leave you guessing.
